Project Collette, as in collective, is a proposed 1.2GW offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea, off the Cumbrian coast, governed and financed with the community at its heart. Large enough to power about 1 million homes, Collette’s electricity will save around 1,000,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, around 15% of Cumbria’s carbon footprint.1
Community-led offshore wind
Collette will be genuinely ground-breaking in how she is run, governed and financed. The idea of communities and residents directly benefiting from, having a say in and holding some stake in offshore wind is rare. This is something we aim to change.
Less than 1% of UK offshore wind is owned by UK public bodies, and over 80% is owned by companies based overseas.2 This means much of the profit flows out of the country, leaving local people with little say and even less of a financial return. Collette sets out to change that. Our aims are:
- Homegrown ownership: a unique opportunity for UK investors to have a stake in larger UK renewables
- Local investment: bringing capital to coastal regions
- Local benefit, local decisions: channeling returns into community projects chosen by local people
At 1.2GW, Collette will become both a local and national endeavour, generating not just electricity, but hope, opportunity, and ownership across the country.
Each time a Collette blade rotates, that could be cash to you and benefits to the local community.
